So I finally found a few minutes this evening to wipe out an old server (3Ghz P4 box) and try out Ubuntu Edgy install. .. after much wrestling with what's supposed to be an easy install (ubuntu didn't pick up my video card properly so I was at 640x480, etc..) I was able to dig around in it a bit.. it's not easy to get around if you aren't a Linux user. .. for example.. if I installed the Flash Player then Firefox would crash every time it encountered Flash content. Ouch. So I search around on the web and find that this is - normal -. Loads of people had this problem. The solution isn't all that difficult if you're familiar with the file system and know how to edit a text file... and you know how to change the color depth of your system via a text file. As usual I didn't let it get the best of me and I eventually saw glorious Flash 9 stuff playing on my sparkley new ubuntu install.

Anyway, so I started getting Red5 installed and ran across this thread on a linux board and it capped off the night.. I just had to laugh...

(Soul's Raider):I want install red5 on Enterprise, help!!!.
Thanks very much.
------------------------------
(Jaqui):Red5?

I've never heard of that application.

do you mean the antiquated release of Red Hat Linux 5?
[ if Red Hat had kept the same numbering they would be on version 12 or 13 by now, 5 is extremely old ]

or maybe you meant Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5?
[ the latest version ]
put the boot cd / dvd into the system cd or dvd drive, boot up into the installer andfollow the onscreen prompts.

------------------------------
(Soul's Rader): That mean:
Red5: Open Source Flash Server.
it can push calls and information to the Flash client!
------------------------------
(Jaqui): ahh, never heard of it, since I detest flash and won't install the client.
clientside scripting is criminal and a severe security risk, no one with any brains has any clientside scripting enabled.*
[ security professionals, 2+ years, disable ALL clientside scripting ]
you want to have your domain known as a malware server?
[clientside is malware, flash is malware ]

ahhh.. lol..

(updated 12/16/07 to add.. Red5 now has an installer for ubuntu http://www.osflash.org/red5/red5downloads)
